MUMBAI – Chana prices are expected to remain range-bound as millers buy only as needed due to low consumption, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday. Usually during summer, there is low demand for chana as demand for chana dal and besan fall because of the heat. Further, availability of cheaper substitutes like yellow peas also weighed on chana prices, the report said.

Chana prices showed a mixed trend during the week ended Saturday. Some markets saw a rise in chana prices, supported by good quality arrivals and local demand, while prices were down in a few markets because of low demand for processed chana. However, the overall market remained cautious because of availability of cheaper yellow peas as a substitute.

On Saturday, chana prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous week at INR 6,000-INR 6,050 per 100 kg. In Maharashtra's Akola market, prices were down INR 150 at INR 5,925-INR 5,950 per 100 kg. However, in Rajasthan's Jaipur market, chana prices rose by INR 25 from the previous week to INR 5,750 per 100 kg.

The government had procured 97,013 tonnes of chana under the price support scheme at the minimum support price of INR 5,650 per 100 kg, according to the report. "Government procurement is slow, as local mandi prices are near or above the MSP."  End
