MUMBAI – After falling for eight consecutive months, the global FAO all rice price index for April inched up from the previous month, supported by higher fragrant and Japonica rice prices, according to data from the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization. For April, the index reading was 104.9 points, up 0.8% from March and 22.6% lower than the corresponding period last year.

Among the four major rice indices, three rose from the previous month, while the Glutinous index averaged 102.8 points in April, compared to 107.2 points in March.

The Japonica rice index rose to 97.9 points in April from 94.3 points in March and the Aromatic rice index averaged 90.5 points, up from 88.2 points the previous month, the report said. "In both cases, the gains were driven by easing harvest pressure in Vietnam, although an uptick in buying interest from domestic and offshore traders provided additional underpinning to aromatic prices," it said.

The price of Vietnam 25% broken rice was $370 per tonne in April, higher than $359.5 per tonne in March. Prices of rice in Vietnam rose as the winter-spring harvest approached its end, the report said.

The Indica index was at an average of 109.4 points, up 0.5% from March. "Export quotations of Indica rice followed mixed trends in the major Asian origins in April. Offseason crop arrivals and weak demand kept prices on a downtrend in Thailand." The price of Thailand's A1 Super rice variety fell to $352.3 per tonne in April from $362.3 per tonne in March and that of the 25% broken variety from the country fell $to 397 per tonne from $410.3 per tonne.

"In India, sales to African buyers provided some underpinning to quotations of lower grade supplies. However, with demand remaining otherwise subdued and sentiment weighed by large availabilities, Indian prices of other qualities continued to ease," the report said.

The average price of 25% broken non-basmati rice exported from India rose to $361.3 per tonne in April from $359.3 per tonne in March, as per the report. However, the average price of 5% broken non-basmati rice fell to $375.5 per tonne from $377.5 per tonne. The price of 5% parboiled rice from India was also down at $397.6 per tonne in April from $406.3 per tonne. The price of pusa basmati was unchanged from the previous month at $875.0 per tonne in April.

Pakistan's 5% rice was up at $392.3 per tonne in April from $386.5 per tonne in March. The price of the basmati rice variety from the country was at $955.5 per tonne in April, up from $924.8 in March.  End
