MUMBAI – Prices of mustard and groundnut were steady in Jaipur and Gondal, respectively, while those of soybean were unavailable as Indore market was shut on account of Akshaya Tritiya, according to traders.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,250-INR 6,275 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals across India were down 100,000 bags at 425,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). "There were less arrivals on Wednesday because of the festival," said a trader from the agency.
"Some improvement in mustard prices is expected during June as there will be less arrivals and the government, at that time would have procured more of the new crop," Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from Rajasthan said. Usually during April and May, mustard arrivals in various markets across the country increases, he said.
GROUNDNUT prices, including those of poor, medium and best varieties, were steady at INR 4,300-INR 5,650 per 100 kg in Gondal, Gujarat, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. "Millers are buying cautiously and not doing bulk-buying due to sluggish demand for groundnut oil which, in turn, is weighing down on prices," he said. Moreover, export demand is also not very good, he added.
However, China has recently started buying crushed groundnuts and some amount of groundnut oil from India, which can support groundnut prices in long-term," said Neharu Kher, a groundnut exporter based in Gujarat.
SOYBEAN prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were unavailable as most of the markets in Madhya Pradesh including Indore, Ujjain, Ratlam, Rajgarh, Mandsaur, Shajapur, Vidisha, and Dewas were closed on Wednesday on account of Akshaya Tritiya, said Sandeep Sarda, a local trader from the state. Most of them will remain close on Thursday, too, because of labour's day, he added.
