MUMBAI – Prices of mustard and groundnut were steady, while those of soybean rose slightly in key markets on Tuesday, according to traders. Across key markets, prices are reacting to oversupply and weak demand, they added.
Prices of MUSTARD seed in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 6,250-INR 6,275 per 100 kg, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals across India were down 100,000 bags at 525,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
"Mustard prices have been under pressure due to continuous high arrivals in March and April," said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader from Rajasthan. Due to sluggish export demand for rapeseed meal, prices are estimated to be under pressure in May too, he said.
"The rapeseed meal export plummeted due to lack of demand from destinations," the Solvent Extractors' Association said in its monthly release. India exported 1.87 million tonnes of rapeseed meal in Apr-Mar, lower than 2.21 million tonnes a year ago, the release said.
GROUNDNUT prices, including those of poor, medium and best varieties, were steady at INR 4,300-INR 5,650 per 100 kg in Gondal, Gujarat, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. "Demand for groundnut and groundnut oil is poor domestically and internationally," he said. "Moreover, higher summer sowing recently may lead to a decline in prices in the medium-to-long term." Groundnut acreage rose 4.8% on year to 431,000 hectares all over India, according to data released by the agriculture ministry Tuesday.
SOYBEAN prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose slightly by INR 150 to 4,100-INR 4,350 per 100 kg, said Shailendra Soni, a local trader. Arrivals decreased by 2,000 bags to 2,200 bags (1 bag = 90 kg), he said. "Due to less arrivals in market on Tuesday, prices have slightly risen, but this is a temporary change as other factors like huge soyoil imports and sluggish soymeal demand are limiting gains in prices," he said.
According to data released by the SEA, crude soyoil imports during March increased to 355,358 tonnes from 218,604 tonnes a year ago. Crude soyoil imports during Nov-Mar rose to 1.91 million tonnes from 882,943 tonnes same period last year. Soymeal exports in March were down 5% on year at 187,678 tonnes, according to data by the association.
