NEW DELHI – About 99.5% of the 200 sugar mills in Maharashtra have ended cane crushing for the sugar season 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) by mid-April, according to the Sugar Commissionerate. Sugar output in the state fell 26% on year to 8.1 million tonnes largely due to a decline in the recovery rate and lower availability of canes.

As of Apr. 15, 199 mills in the state ended operations and only one was operational in Pune. It is expected to remain in operation till the second week of May, according to the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association. Of the 199 mills in the state that shut operations, 45 mills are in Solapur, 40 mills in Kolhapur, 30 mills in Pune, 29 mills in Nanded, 26 mills in Ahilyanagar, 22 mills in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, among others.

Mills in the state have crushed 85.2 million tonnes of sugarcane, compared with 107.4 million tonnes last season. The state's overall sugar recovery rate was 9.48%, lower than 10.25% recovery rate last year. Sugar production in Maharashtra has ended 100,000 tonnes higher than the estimated 8.0 million tonnes by the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories in mid-March.

As of Apr. 15, mills in India produced 25.5 million tonnes of sugar as of Tuesday, accounting for 99.6% of the production estimate for 2024-25 (Oct-Sept), according to the Indian Sugar and Bio-Energy Manufacturers Association. Last year, the country's sugar output was 31.90 million tonnes.

As per ISMA, factories in Uttar Pradesh are expected to remain in operation till late April or May first week due to improved cane availability and yields. Also, some factories in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu are expected to restart operations during the special season from June or July to September. Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Karnataka are major sugar producers.  End
