MUMBAI – Prices of tur are expected to stay weak in the short term due to muted demand from millers and a lack of support from stockists, the India Pulses and Grains Association's weekly report said on Monday. Prices have come under further pressure due to reduced sales of processed tur, or tur dal, as cheaper substitutes like yellow peas are available, coupled with lower consumption during the summer.
Prices may remain subdued due to the government's slow procurement pace, the association said. So far, the government has acquired 392,000 tonnes of tur for the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) kharif marketing season at the minimum support price, which accounts for just over 30% of the total procurement target of 1.3 million tonnes. The legume is being purchased at the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kilogram.
Domestic tur prices are also under pressure from an increase in imports, according to the association. Around 70% of the April deliveries of the lemon variety of tur from Myanmar arrived in the country in the last week of the month. Deliveries of the May shipments will begin this week, further adding to the downward pressure on prices.
In the week ended Saturday, tur prices faced downward pressure in most markets due to sluggish demand. Prices also fell tracking the lower cost and freight rates for shipments from Myanmar, the association noted. Further, despite the current kharif tur arrival season (Dec-Apr) nearing its end, market sentiment remained weak.
However, in limited markets, prices of tur remained firm as farmers refused to sell at lower rates, and millers made some need-based purchases, the association said.
In the week ended Saturday, prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, fell by INR 38 from the last week to INR 5,700-INR 7,171 per 100 kg, the association said. On the other hand, prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 25 from the previous week to INR 7,400-INR 7,425 per 100 kg. End
