MUMBAI – Urad prices could remain under pressure in the near term due to weak demand and low sales of processed urad, or urad dal, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday.
Prices could also be weighed down by ongoing imports from Myanmar, which are only expected to rise as the country has had a large crop this season, the association said. The new summer crop from Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat will also arrive soon, followed by shipments of the legume from Brazil, which will begin from mid-June.
As such, trade sources expect prices to fall steeply in May, the association said. Market sentiment remains cautious, with price trends also depending on the cost and freight rates of Myanmar's shipments, it said.
Prices of Myanmar-origin urad and domestic urad continued to fall in the week ended Saturday due to low miller purchases and muted demand for processed urad, the association said. Prices were also weighed down by the steady supply from Myanmar and a fall in the cost and freight quotes of the shipments, as well as the ongoing rabi arrivals, it said.
In the week ended Saturday, prices of urad in Chandausi, Uttar Pradesh, fell by INR 125 from the last week to INR 7,250 per 100 kg, according to the association. Similarly, prices of imported urad in the port city of Chennai fell by INR 150 from the previous week to INR 6,950 per 100 kg. End
