MUMBAI – Maize prices rose in the domestic market Wednesday as buying picked up, traders said. Prices of the cereal have been low for almost a month. Prices of rice and wheat were largely unchanged from the previous day, traders said.

Prices of MAIZE in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 15 to INR 2,270 per 100 kg from the previous day, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices rose slightly as demand picked up, traders said. However, in the near term, maize prices are likely to continue declining amid pressure from rabi arrivals in Bihar and central India. Traders expect prices of the commodity to rise by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg only after two months, when new arrivals start decreasing.

According to data released by the agriculture ministry, the area under maize, the largest coarse cereal grown during summer, rose to 685,000 hectares from 532,000 hectares last year.

Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Kota, Rajasthan, were steady at INR 2,400-INR 2,430 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals fell by 20,000 bags from Monday to 100,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), he said, adding that arrivals have also fallen from last week, when they were at 250,000-300,000 bags a day. From now on, arrivals are likely to remain at the level of 100,000-150,000 bags, traders said.

Wheat prices in Indore were largely unchanged from the previous day at INR 2,680 per 100 kg while arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 3,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), Kochar said. Prices of the same quality wheat were steady in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a local trader. However, in Delhi, prices of the staple grain were up by INR 10 at INR 2,640 per 100 kg, according to traders.

The quality of wheat arriving in markets now is poor, having lost its lustre due to the recent rainfall in northern India, Vora said. He added, however, that this is a problem only in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. As of now, there is no damage to the crop or any shortfall in production, with the rains affecting only the quality of the wheat, which will mostly be procured by the government. Vora said wheat prices are likely to remain in a range in the near term.

Prices of kolam RICE in Nagpur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg. Prices of new basmati rice also remained unchanged at INR 6,000–INR 6,400 per 100 kg in the Vashi market, Vora said. Prices of broken rice also remained steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said, adding that prices are likely to remain steady in the short term due to muted export demand.  End
