Global March primary aluminium output up 10% on month, says global institute

MUMBAI – Global production of primary aluminium rose 10% to 6.23 million tonnes in March from 5.66 million tonnes in February, according to data from the International Aluminium Institute. On an annual basis, production rose 2.3% from 6.09 million tonnes.

 

Global daily average aluminium production in March was 200,870 tonnes, down from 202,143 tonnes in February, because of the higher number of days last month. Aluminium production in China is estimated to have increased by 330,000 tonnes from a month ago to 3.73 million tonnes in March, the data showed. The country accounts for nearly 60% of the metal's global production. Daily average aluminium production in China fell to 120,290 tonnes in March from 121,392 tonnes in February.

 

In Asia, excluding China, production rose to 415,000 tonnes in March from 374,000 tonnes a month ago. In Africa, production in March rose by 15,000 tonnes to 138,000 tonnes.

 

In the Gulf Cooperation Council, production jumped up by 49,000 tonnes to 523,000 tonnes in March. Production of primary aluminium in Europe, including Russia, rose to 594,000 tonnes in March from 537,000 tonnes in the previous month. Output of the metal in North America rose by 34,000 tonnes to 338,000 tonnes in March and production in South America rose by 12,000 tonnes to 131,000 tonnes.

 

Global alumina production in February fell 10.3% on month to 11.54 million tonnes, as per the latest available data. At 1810 IST, the three-month aluminium futures contract on the London Metal Exchange was up 1.5% at $2,415.50 per tonne.  End
