MUMBAI – Soybean prices fell in Indore, Madhya Pradesh as government agencies started selling the seed in the open market, traders said. Prices of mustard rose slightly Wednesday as arrivals fell, but traders expect prices to fall amid high supply. Groundnut prices were steady Wednesday due to lack of new cues.
SOYBEAN prices in Indore were down INR 50 at INR 4,150-INR 4,400 per 100 kg, said Sandeep Sarda, a local trader. Arrivals were up by 200 bags at 4,700 bags (1 bag = 90 kg), he said. Prices of the seed were steady from the previous day at INR 4,400 per 100 kg in Rajasthan's Kota, traders said.
"Government agencies like NAFED have started selling soybean in mandis like Malwa, Rajgarh, Mandsour, Ratlam, Dewas, Shajapur, Ujjain, and many more, which is now affecting soybean prices negatively," Sarda said. This selling by the government will continue for the next two to three months, and soybean prices will be under pressure, he added. Moreover, increasing demand for distillers' dried grains with solubles is leading to poor consumption of soymeal both domestically and internationally, he added.
Prices of MUSTARD seed were up INR 50 from the previous day at INR 6,325-INR 6,350 per 100 kg in Jaipur, Rajasthan, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals across India were down 25,000 bags at 700,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
"Some recovery is seen on Wednesday, but this is a small, temporary one and will be short-lived keeping in mind the poor demand for Indian rapeseed meal," said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader in Rajasthan. Moreover, new rabi crop arrivals with high moisture content, coupled with lower procurement by the government is also weighing on prices, traders said.
So far, the government has bought 864.7 tonnes of mustard, or 0.06% of the total 1.5 million tonnes it aims to buy during the 2025-26 rabi marketing season under the price support scheme.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal, Gujarat, were also steady at INR 4,000-INR 5,550 per 100 kg, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. "Neither major improvement is seen currently nor it is expected in long term in groundnut prices as prices are stagnant because export demand is poor and quality arrivals are almost none," Virvani said.
Groundnut prices have been in this range, which is below the minimum support price of INR 6,783 per 100 kg, for more than a month. The government has bought 70.5% of the total 2.05 million tonnes, or 1.40 million tonnes, of the groundnut grown during the kharif season in crop year 2024-25 (Jul-Jun).
