NEW DELHI – In a deadly terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, terrorists Tuesday opened fire on people at a prime tourist spot in Pahalgam in south Kashmir. According to reports, over 20 people were killed in the attack while several others suffered grievous injuries. The authorities have not released any casualty figures yet.
The terrorists opened fire at the tourists in Baisaran, an off-the-road tourist spot in Pahalgam, media reports stated. Tourists hailing from different states, including Odisha and Karnataka, were present at the location when the attack took place. Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah said the attack was "much larger than anything seen directed at civilians in recent years".
Following the attack, Union Home Minister Amit Shah left for Jammu and Kashmir to hold an urgent security review meeting with all agencies. Shah said he had briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the incident and also held a meeting with the officials concerned via video conferencing.
Modi, who is on a two-day visit to Saudi Arabia, condemned the attack and offered condolences to those who had lost their loved ones. "Those behind this heinous act will be brought to justice," he posted on social media platform X. "They will not be spared! Their evil agenda will never succeed. Our resolve to fight terrorism is unshakable and it will get even stronger."
President Droupadi Murmu also condemned the "dastardly and inhuman act". "The terrorist attack on tourists in Pahalgam of Jammu and Kashmir is shocking and painful," she said on X. "Attacking innocent citizens, in this case tourists, is utterly appalling and unpardonable."
Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi hit out at the government's "hollow claims" of the situation in Jammu and Kashmir returning to normal, and urged it to become accountable and take concrete measures to prevent such incidents. End
