MUMBAI – Prices of wheat were mixed across key markets of the country on Tuesday, traders said. Wheat prices were up in Rajasthan's Kota while they fell in New Delhi. Traders said maize prices rose in Indore as demand picked up at lower levels. Prices of rice were steady from the previous day due to lack of fresh cues.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Kota were up by INR 20 at INR 2,430 per 100 kg as arrivals have fallen from last week, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Although arrivals rose by 30,000 bags from Monday to 120,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), they were down from 250,000-300,000 bags in the previous week, Mehta said.
Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,690 per 100 kg while arrivals fell by 1,000 bags to 4,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices of the same quality wheat were steady in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, at INR 2,750 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a local trader.
However, in Delhi, prices of the staple grain were down by INR 50 at INR 2,630 per 100 kg as the quality of wheat is poor, according to traders. "The quality of wheat arriving in the market is low as it lost its lustre due to recent rains in northern India," Vora said. He added that this problem persists only in Bihar, Jharkhand, and Uttar Pradesh. However, he said, as of now, there is no damage to the crop or any downfall in production, and the rain has just affected the crop in quality terms and which will mostly be bought by the government.
Vora said wheat prices are likely to remain range bound in the near-term, and that there is low demand for the grain due to the heatwave. "Usually during summer, especially when there is a heatwave, people consume less wheat," Vora said.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore rose by INR 10 to INR 2,270 per 100 kg from the previous day, Kochar said. Prices rose slightly as demand picked up at the lower end, traders said. However, in the near-term, maize prices are likely to continue to decline amid pressure from rabi arrivals in Bihar and central India.
Prices of kolam RICE in Nagpur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg. Prices of new basmati rice also remained unchanged at INR 6,000–INR 6,400 per 100 kg in the Vashi market, Vora said. Prices of broken rice also remained steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he said, adding that prices are likely to remain steady in the short term due to muted export demand. End
