MUMBAI – Prices of urad could remain under pressure in the short term due to weak demand, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. Traders are likely to remain cautious due to steady supply from Myanmar and the ongoing rabi crop arrivals in Andhra Pradesh, the association said.

Prices could also fall as arrivals of the summer urad crop in Madhya Pradesh are likely to begin in the next 15 days, the association said. As of Thursday, the acreage under urad in the ongoing summer crop season rose to 271,000 hectares from 230,000 hectares last year, according to data from the agriculture ministry.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of imported urad fell due to a rise in shipments from Myanmar, and a drop in cost and freight prices, the association said. Prices of domestic urad also fell due to low demand for processed urad, or urad dal. Prices in Guntur, Andhra Pradesh, fell by INR 150 from last week to INR 7,350 per 100 kg. Prices of imported urad in the port city of Chennai also fell INR 175 from the previous week to INR 7,100 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
