MUMBAI – Prices of tur are likely to stay under pressure in the short term due to weak demand from millers, slow sales of processed tur, or tur dal, availability of cheaper alternatives such as yellow peas, and slow government procurement, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. The demand for processed tur is seasonally low, as people consume less pulses during summer.

While the government has procurred 308,559 tonnes of tur as of Apr. 9, it is far away from meeting its target of buying 1 million tonnes for building a buffer, the association said. Currently, procurement of tur in Karnataka is the highest among all states at 130,000 tonnes, as the state is offering a INR 450 per 100 kg bonus over and above the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg, the association said.

Prices of tur are also expected to face pressure from Myanmar imports, which are likely to rise in the short term, the association said. In the week ended Saturday, prices of the lemon variety of tur from Myanmar have fallen INR 175 from last week to INR 6,775 per 100 kg.

Tur prices continued to fall in the week ended Saturday due to weak market sentiment, the association said. Mills only bought as needed due to slow sales of processed tur. Lower cost and freight quotes and a rise in imports from Myanmar also weighed on prices, the association said.

In the week ended Saturday, prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra, fell INR 125 from the previous week to INR 7,350-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, also fell INR 307 from last week to INR 6,000-INR 7,209 per 100 kg.  End
