MUMBAI – Prices of chana are expected to move within a range this week, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. Limited selling at lower prices has helped prevent a further decline, but market sentiment remains cautious due to a strong rabi chana harvest, higher yield in some states, and the availability of yellow peas, a cheaper substitute for chana.

Stockists are reluctant to buy the legume at elevated prices, though some demand from millers may help support prices at the lower end of the range.

Higher procurement by the government could support prices as well, though progress on this front has been lagging due to higher prices of chana in spot markets, the association said. Despite approval for the procurement of 2.7 million tonnes of chana, the government has procured only 17,000 tonnes so far, mainly from Telangana and Madhya Pradesh.

Chana prices in spot markets are either close to or above the minimum support level of INR 5,650 per 100 kg, prompting farmers to sell to spot participants over the government. Even if prices fall below the minimum support level or by INR 300 per 100 kg at least, farmers will hold onto their produce, waiting for better prices. Farmers prefer selling in the spot market over the government as the former ensures immediate cash payment against waiting for a few days for payment through a bank account.

In the week ended Saturday, chana prices remained steady, supported by limited selling by farmers and some buying interest from stockists, the association said. However, purchases by millers were subdued due to a seasonal dip in demand for besan and chana dal, as consumption typically declines during the summer months.

In the week ended Saturday, chana prices in Akola, Maharashtra, increased by INR 25 from the previous week, reaching INR 6,100–6,150 per 100 kg, according to the association. In Delhi, too, prices rose by INR 25 from the previous week to INR 5,800–5,825 per 100 kg.  End
