NEW DELHI – India's oilmeal exports in March rose 3% on year to 409,148 tonnes, according to data released by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India on Friday. However, total oilmeal exports in Apr-Mar fell 11% to 4.3 million tonnes, mainly due to decline in export of rapeseed meal and castorseed meal, it added. In terms of value, oilmeal exports fell 21% on year to INR 121.7 billion in Apr-Mar.

"The prices of oilmeals in last one year reduced in terms of US dollars in the international market, resulting in a decline in exports of oilmeals," the SEA said. The rupee in the international market became weak against dollar and fell to INR 85.47 as of Mar. 28, against INR 83.42 at the beginning of April last year.

India exported 1.87 million tonnes of rapeseed meal in Apr-Mar, lower than 2.21 million tonnes a year ago. "The rapeseed meal export plummeted due to lack of demand from destinations," the SEA said. In March, exports of mustard meal rose to 192,869 tonnes from 173,589 tonnes a year ago.

The ongoing shortage of rapeseed meal in the European Union has led to a significant increase in global prices. "Given the current supply constraints and rising prices, India has a renewed opportunity to explore and recapture its lost share in the Chinese market," the SEA said. "If China relaxes the existing stringent conditions on the import of Indian rapeseed meal, India could become a key supplier and meet a substantial portion of China's demand."

The overall export of soymeal during Apr-Mar fell marginally to 2.12 million tonnes from 2.13 million tonnes in the same period in 2023-24. Germany and France are the major importers of non-gentically modified soymeal from India.

Groundnut meal exports increased to 3,682 tonnes in March from nil a year ago. During Apr-Mar, groundnut meal exports increased to 24,369 tonnes to 14,833 tonnes a year ago.

In Apr-Mar, exports from the Kandla port fell 11.7% on year to 1.44 million tonnes. Exports from the Mundra port were 955,278 tonnes, down 34.3% from the corresponding period last year, the SEA said. Other ports that majorly exported oilmeal were the Kolkata Port Trust and Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai.

During Apr-Mar, India's oilmeal exports to Bangladesh fell 16.8% on year to 742,115 tonnes. Despite a lot of political turbulence, Bangladesh remained the largest importer of Indian oilmeals, the Association said. South Korea was the second largest importer with 699,079 tonnes, down 15.9% on year.

The following table details exports of major types of oilmeals, in tonnes, in March and Apr-Mar, compared with the year-ago numbers (in tonnes), according to the latest data from the SEA, and the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
