MUMBAI – Mustard prices fell Thursday due to higher arrivals in local markets, while soybean prices in Indore rose, traders said. Prices of groundnut were steady in Gondal, Gujarat, they said.
Prices of MUSTARD seed were down INR 25 at INR 6,325-INR 6,350 per 100 kg in Jaipur, Rajasthan, according to Marudhar Trading Agency. Arrivals across India were 675,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), up 25,000 bags from Wednesday.
"Due to increasing arrivals of new mustard crop, prices are not improving much," said Mahesh Sameriya, a local trader from Rajasthan. "The price trend is expected to remain the same in May. However, during Jun-Jul when the arrivals will be less, prices can climb up," Sameriya added.
SOYBEAN prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose slightly by INR 41 to INR 4,291-INR 4,550 per 100 kg. Arrivals were at 4,200 bags (1 bag = 90 kg), up 400 bags from Wednesday.
"Soybean prices have been hovering around INR 4,200-INR 4,650 per 100 kg since past two weeks. Prices are under pressure due to the huge availability of soybean crop in most of the markets. Moreover, huge soyoil imports are not very beneficial as domestic oil mills are not making enough profit," said Sandeep Sarda, a local trader from Indore, Madhya Pradesh.
Crude soyoil imports during March increased to 355,358 tonnes from 218,604 tonnes a year ago. Crude soyoil imports during Nov-Mar rose to 1.91 million tonnes from 882,943 tonnes during the same period last year.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal were steady at INR 4,200-INR 5,750 per 100 kg, traders said. "Groundnut prices haven't been performing well since a month. They are hardly touching the INR 6,000 per 100 kg level and are still below the MSP of INR 6,783. Major improvement isn't expected in prices in near-term as domestic and international demand is poor and quality arrivals are very rare in mandis," said Ashok Virvani, a trader from Gujarat.
