MUMBAI - Wheat prices in Kota, Rajasthan, fell on Thursday from the previous day, even as demand for the staple remained strong, traders said. The fall in prices was attributed to limited storage space in both Kota and Baran markets, where the commodity was being sold at lower prices. Meanwhile, maize and rice prices remained steady, with traders citing a lack of fresh cues.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Kota were down by INR 25 at INR 2,335-INR 2,355 per 100 kg amid a 10% higher output this year, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Despite firm demand and continuous buying, prices fell as there is no place to stock the staple grain, he said, adding "traders are searching for space". Arrivals were also steady from the previous day at 150,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
Prices of the same quality wheat in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, remained steady from the previous day at INR 2,680 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Arrivals too were steady at 5,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said.
Prices of the same quality wheat held steady in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, at INR 2,750 per 100 kg, Devendra Vora, a local trader, said. Wheat prices are expected to fall by INR 50–INR 100 per 100 kg by the end of April, once the arrivals start in the northern belt, Vora said.
According to Vora, wheat arrivals have been delayed this year in Punjab, Haryana, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh due to rainfall during the harvest period. However, the impact of the rain on the wheat crop has been minimal. "Till arrivals start in these states, prices are likely to be steady," Vora added.
Prices of MAIZE in Indore remained steady from the previous day at INR 2,260 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Traders anticipate a continued downtrend in maize prices, driven by fresh crop arrivals in central India and an expected increase in output from Bihar. However, arrivals in Bihar--the largest rabi season maize producer--ave been delayed for now due to heavy rainfall.
Prices of kolam RICE in Nagpur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg. Prices of new basmati rice also remained unchanged at INR 6,000–INR 6,400 per 100 kg in the Vashi market, Vora said. Prices of broken rice were steady at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, he added. Prices are likely to remain steady in the short term due to muted export demand, according to Vora. End
