NEW DELHI – Ex-mill prices of sugar in the key markets of Maharashtra fell Wednesday due to tepid demand. Prices were steady in Uttar Pradesh due to lack of selling pressure, said traders.
Prices fell in Maharashtra by INR 10-INR 12 per 100 kg due to poor demand. "Due to multiple holidays since last week, people are out of the city (Mumbai). Purchases of soft drinks, ice creams and sweets are weak," said Mukesh Kuvadia, secretary of the Bombay Sugar Merchants Association.
Mills across Uttar Pradesh kept prices steady due to lack of selling pressure, said Naresh Gupta, a trader from north India. "It's a strange thing. Normally, demand picks up in April. But it is not," Gupta said. "But mills are not under selling pressure, so prices are steady," he added. Typically, April sees an uptick in sugar purchases as demand from soft drink and ice-cream makers increases during summer.
The following are the highlights of sugar prices in the domestic market:
--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in western Uttar Pradesh
--Flat at INR 3,900-INR 4,000 per 100 kg in central Uttar Pradesh
--Down INR 10-INR 12 at INR 3,800-INR 3,855 per 100 kg in Kolhapur, Maharashtra
--Down INR 10-INR 12 at INR 4,006-INR 4,082 per 100 kg in Mumbai, Maharashtra
At 1634 IST, sugar prices on the Intercontinental Exchange were largely flat at 17.65 cents per pound. End
