India sugar output at 25.4 mln tn as of Tue, down 18.4% on yr - federation

MUMBAI – Mills in India have produced 25.4 million tonnes of sugar as of Tuesday, down 18.4% from 31.2 million tonnes produced in the same period a year ago, according to data from the National Federation of Cooperative Sugar Factories. Sugarcane production so far this season is down due to a decline in crushing in major producing states such as Karnataka, Gujarat, Bihar, and Tamil Nadu, the federation said.
The federation has estimated the net sugar production in the country during the 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) season at 25.9 million tonnes, down 19% from 31.9 million tonnes produced last season. The country's average sugar recovery rate is seen at 9.4%, compared to 10.2% last year, the federation said. So far this season, mills have crushed 271.3 million tonnes of sugarcane, down from 306.6 million tonnes a year ago.
As of Tuesday, 200 mills were active in Maharashtra compared with 207 mills at the same time last year, the federation said. Sugar mills in the state have produced 8.07 million tonnes of sugar, down 26% from 10.9 million a year ago, the federation said.
In Uttar Pradesh, 122 mills are active as of Tuesday compared with 121 mills a year ago, it said. Mills in the state have crushed 93.7 million tonnes of sugarcane to produce 9.1 million tonnes of sugar so far during the season, down 11% on year. The sugar production in the state is estimated at 9.15 million tonnes in the current year, down from 10.4 million tonnes the previous year. The average sugar recovery in the state is projected at 9.7%, down from 10.6% a year ago.
As of Tuesday, 79 mills were active in Karnataka as against 76 mills a year ago. Mills in the state have produced 4.04 million tonnes of sugar so far during the season, down 21% from 5.1 million tonnes a year ago. The federation estimates sugar output in Karnataka at 4.2 million tonnes in 2024-25, down from 5.3 million tonnes last year. The average sugar recovery rate in the state is seen at 8.5%, down from 9.8% during last season. End
