MUMBAI – Futures contracts of jeera and turmeric rose on the National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange on Tuesday while contracts of coriander fell. Jeera prices rose due to improved demand for wedding season while coriander prices fell due to rise in arrivals across major markets across India, according to analysts at SMC Global Securities.
The most-active May contract of TURMERIC rose 2.9% to INR 14,980 per 100 kg because of increased buying and reduced carryover stocks, according to SMC Global. The long-term trend is also expected to remain bullish, supported by supply-side factors, the brokerage firm said. Lower crop estimates may also support turmeric prices in the long run. In the near term, prices are likely to trade in the range of INR 14,200-15,000 per 100 kg.
The most-active May contract of JEERA rose 0.7% to INR 24,590 per 100 kg due to demand for weddings around this time of the year and aggressive buying for exports, analysts at SMC Global said. Various factors like lower farmer selling and active miller buying support influenced by estimated crop losses in Gujarat and Rajasthan, along with reduced acreage this season, are likely to cap any fall in prices, the brokerage said. In the near term, prices are likely to trade in the range of INR 24,000-INR 24,800 per 100 kg.
The most-active May contract of CORIANDER were down 1.8% to INR 7,680 per 100 kg due to increased arrivals in most of the spot markets across India. Decline in exports also led to fall in prices. Coriander exports slipped in January by 14% on year to 4,420 tonnes while total export quantity declined by 54% to 38,360 tonnes during the Apr-Jan period, according to SMC Global. However, a weak production outlook could support prices, it said. In the near term, coriander futures are likely to trade between INR 7,600 and INR 8,000 per 100 kg.
