MUMBAI – Prices of tur and chana fell Tuesday, while prices of urad were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of tur fell due to a drop in demand for the legume and chana prices declined due to lower demand from millers and fall in purchases by stockists.
CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 6,025-INR 6,050 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 1,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices fell due to drop in purchases by stockists, he said. "Prices had risen last week, which discouraged stockists as they prefer lower rates," he said. Additionally, with low demand for processed chana, or chana dal, demand from millers has also fallen, he said.
Prices were also weighed down by rise in arrivals, Kedia added. In the last two weeks, the markets saw a rise in activity of stockists, which prompted sellers to offload more stock, boosting supply. Prices could fall by INR 100-INR 200 per kg in the short term, he said.
Prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 25 from Monday to INR 5,750-INR 5,775 per 100 kg, traders said.
TUR prices in Akola fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 7,475-INR 7,500 per 100 kg, Kedia said. Arrivals were steady at 1,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices have been on the downtrend since last week due to fall in demand for the legume, he said. Demand is seasonally low, and millers have already stocked up tur for the short term, he said. Prices could fall further by INR 100-INR 200 by the end of the month, he said.
Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, fell by INR 100 from Friday to INR 6,101-7,423 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. The market was shut Monday on account of Ambedkar Jayanti. Arrivals fell by 696 bags to 6,992 bags (1 bag = 50kg).
URAD prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,500-INR 8,000 per 100 kg, traders said. Similarly, prices in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,500- 7,200 per 100 kg, they said.
Urad prices are likely to remain steady in the near term, with millers buying only as needed, the association said. Millers are holding back purchases due to weak demand for urad dal, it said. End
