MUMBAI – Chana prices are likely to stay rangebound this week amid the government's procurement, purchases by stockists, and ongoing arrivals of the rabi crop, the India Pulses and Grains Assoication said in its weekly report on Monday. The government's procurement and limited selling by farmers and traders may support prices, preventing a drop, it said.
The pace of the government's purchases and stockists' demand will determine if prices will hold steady in the short term, the association said.
Prices of chana fell in the week ended Saturday as demand from stockists and traders dropped amid higher rates, the association said. Trading activities also fell due to holidays, with Mahavir Jayanti on Friday and Hanuman Jayanti on Saturday.
The government's procurement is also progressing slowly. Prices of chana in spot markets are either close to or above the minimum support level of INR 5,650 per 100 kg, prompting farmers to sell to spot participants over the government. Even if prices fall below the minimum support level or by INR 300 per 100 kg at least, farmers will hold onto their produce, waiting for better prices. Farmers prefer selling in the spot market over the government as the former ensures immediate cash payment against waiting for a few days for a payment via a bank account.
Prices were also weighed down by caution among buyers as arrivals are yet to peak in major producing states such as Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. Meanwhile, demand from millers dropped due to weak summer demand for processed chana, or chana dal, and besan.
In the week ended Saturday, prices of chana in Akola, Maharashtra, fell by INR 125 per 100 kg from the previous week to INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 50 per 100 kg to INR 6,125-INR 6,150 per 100 kg. End
