MUMBAI – India's soymeal exports fell 8% on year to 162,000 tonnes in March, but were up 5% on month, the Soybean Processors Association of India said in a release Friday. Soymeal exports for the Oct-Mar period fell to 1.1 million tonnes from 1.3 million tonnes a year ago, the association said.
In the Oct-Mar period, India exported soymeal to more than 50 countries. Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Iran, France, Germany, Kenya, Nepal, Netherlands, Japan, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania were among the major buyers, according to the association.
The country's soymeal production in March fell to 710,000 tonnes from 829,000 tonnes a year ago. The output in Oct-Mar fell to 4.8 million tonnes from 5.3 million tonnes a year ago, the association said. Soybean, a kharif oilseed, is sown in Jun-Jul and harvested in Oct-Nov.
Soybean arrivals in spot markets were at 600,000 tonnes in March, down from 700,000 tonnes a year ago. During Oct-Mar, arrivals fell to 7.2 million tonnes from 7.7 million tonnes a year ago.
"With the increasing use of the cheaper distillers' dried grains with solubles, or DDGS, as poultry feed instead of soymeal, soybean prices may fall in medium-term and long-term," said Vijay Parashar, a trader from Madhya Pradesh. "However, prices of soybean recovered currently but this will be a short-lived improvement," he said. Soybean prices in the major market of Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were at INR 4,100-INR 4,450 per 100 kg on Wednesday.
At the end of March, oil mills, traders, and farmers were left with around 5.8 million tonnes of soybean stock, down from 6.8 million tonnes the previous month, the association said. The meal stock at the end of March was 110,000 tonnes, against 132,000 tonnes in the preceding month.
Soymeal is a by-product from the extraction of soyoil, primarily used as poultry and livestock feed. Indian soymeal is non-genetically modified and considered rich in protein. India is among the largest importers of soyoil and an exporter of soymeal. End
