NEW DELHI – The US Department of Agriculture has slightly trimmed its global cotton production estimate for 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) by 70,000 bales to 120.89 million bales, compared to its previous estimate of 120.96 million bales last month. One bale equals 217.72 kilograms. Lower production estimates for Argentina, Cote d'Ivoire, and other countries more than offset an increase in China, for an overall decline of 69,000 bales, the department said in its World Agricultural Supply and Demand Estimates report for April.
Production in China is pegged at 32.00 million bales, up from 31.75 million bales forecast in March. The production estimates for Brazil and India remain steady at 17.00 million bales and 25.00 million bales, respectively, according to the report.
Meanwhile, the Cotton Association of India lowered its estimate for domestic cotton production in 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) by 400,000 bales to 29.13 million bales (1 bale = 170 kg) in March. In February, it had lowered its estimate of the country's cotton production to 29.50 million bales.
The USDA has scaled up its estimate for global ending stocks by 5 million bales to 78.86 million bales.
Global cotton consumption has been estimated at 116.02 million bales, down from 116.54 million bales predicted last month. Global textile mill use is seen down 520,000 bales, primarily because of reductions for China and Indonesia, which more than offset an increase for Turkey, the department said.
The global cotton import estimate has been scaled down to 42.36 million bales from 42.69 million bales. Imports are seen lower as reductions for China and Indonesia more than offset an increase for Turkey, as per the report. End
