MUMBAI – Prices of tur fell while those of chana and masur were steady in key spot markets across the country on Wednesday, traders said. Prices of chana are likely to be volatile in the short term amid demand from stockists and rising arrivals of the rabi crop, they said. Prices of tur fell due to seasonally low demand, while prices of masur were steady supported by the government's procurement, they said.

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,150-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices have temporarily stabilised as supply is on par with demand, he said. While arrivals have not begun in full swing after the market reopened following closure during the financial year-end, they are slowly increasing, he said.

Chana prices are expected to remain volatile in the near term amid demand from stockists and rising arrivals of the rabi crop in the markets, Mangal said. "Prices could fall due to arrival pressure, after which the lower rates could attract stockists. A rise in stockists' purchases could support prices again," Mangal added.

On the other hand, prices of chana in Delhi fell by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 5,850-INR 5,875 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,500-INR 7,250 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. The market saw 20-22 trucks (1 truck = 20,000-25,000 kg) bring in tur, he said.

Prices are weighed down by sluggish demand, Srinivas added. Usually, demand for tur rises during Dec-Feb, sometimes stretching into March as well. After that, the market typically goes through a period of seasonally low demand till July, he said. If the commencement of monsoon is delayed, demand for tur can rise again as early as June on fear about sowing of the kharif crop being affected, he said.

Tur prices also fell due to ample arrivals of the legume. While arrivals of the kharif crop reduced on-month, they remain higher year-on-year in Maharashtra due to a better crop this year, he said.

According to the second advance estimates, tur production for 2024-25 (Jul-Jun) is seen at 1.26 million tonnes, up from 890,000 tonnes produced last year. Prices of tur in Katni, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 7,650-INR 7,770 per 100 kg, traders said.

MASUR prices in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,700-INR 6,400 per 100 kg, Mangal said. While demand for the legume is low in spot markets, prices are being supported by government's procurement, he said. "The price being paid by the government is higher than what farmers are receiving in spot markets, (and) so most of the masur is being sold to them (the government)," Mangal further said.

The government has approved the procurement of 940,548 tonnes of masur for the season. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation will purchase masur from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh at the minimum support price of INR 6,700 per 100 kg.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, fell by INR 25 from Tuesday to INR 6,575 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of the choti variety of masur in Bareilly were steady at INR 6,900-INR 6,950 per 100 kg.  End
