MUMBAI - Prices of wheat fell, while those of maize and rice remained steady in key spot markets across the country Wednesday, traders said. Wheat prices came under pressure due to arrivals of the crop, they said. Prices of maize are likely to remain unchanged in the short term as the season as almost ended, they said.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Kota, Rajasthan, fell by INR 10 from Tuesday to INR 2,380 per 100 kg, said Aniket Mehta, a local trader. Arrivals were steady at 250,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Prices have fallen slightly due to pressure from arrivals, he said. With arrivals likely to be in a range of 200,000-300,000 bags per day in April, prices could be down this week at least, he said.
Prices of the same quality wheat in Vashi, Navi Mumbai, were steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, said Devendra Vora, a wholesale dealer. Prices of the staple grain in Delhi were also steady at INR 2,625 per 100 kg, traders said.
Meanwhile, the Food Corp. of India's wheat purchases in the 2025-26 rabi marketing season so far have surged over 100% to 1.89 million tonnes. The FCI has bought 6% of the target and most of the wheat has come from Madhya Pradesh at 1.65 million tonnes, the agency data showed. The wheat procurement target for FY26 is 31.27 million tonnes.
FCI officials attribute the surge to higher production, early start of procurement, and bonuses over the minimum support price announced by Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. Procurement has been underway in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh since the last month, against the typical starting time of April.
Prices of MAIZE in Davanagere, Karnataka, were steady at INR 2,000-INR 2,400 per 100 kg due to lack of new cues, said Shiva Kumar, a local trader. Arrivals were also largely the same at 200 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), as the season has almost ended and those farmers who did not sell the grain are currently selling it, he said. Maize is grown in the kharif season during mid-June and October in Karnataka. Prices are likely to remain unchanged in the short term, he said.
In the current summer crop season, the area under maize, the largest coarse cereal grown during the season, rose to 622,000 hectares from 513,000 hectares a year ago, according to data released by the agriculture ministry Tuesday. Maize acreage has increased as farmers have shifted from other crops like groundnut due to higher returns.
Prices of kolam RICE in Nagpur, Maharashtra, were unchanged at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg. Prices of new basmati rice were also unchanged at INR 6,000-INR 6,400 per 100 kg in the Vashi market, Vora said. Prices of broken rice were steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora added. End
