Centre procures 10 mln bales of cotton as of Mar 31 through Cotton Corp

MUMBAI – The government has procured 10 million bales of cotton as of Mar. 31 under the minimum support price operations through Cotton Corporation of India, the textile ministry said in a release Tuesday. The procurement so far accounts for 38% of the total cotton arrivals of 26.3 million bales and 34% of the estimated total cotton production of 29.4 million bales in the country, it said.
A total of INR 374.5 billion has been paid to approximately 2.1 million cotton farmers across all cotton-producing states. Among the states, Telangana has recorded the highest procurement at 4.0 million bales, followed by Maharashtra at 3.0 million bales and Gujarat at 1.4 million bales. Other states with significant procurement include Karnataka at 500,000 bales, Madhya Pradesh and Andhra Pradesh at 400,000 bales each, and Odisha at 200,000 bales. Procurement in Haryana, Rajasthan, and Punjab was at 115,000 bales, the release said.
To facilitate efficient procurement, the Cotton Corporation of India has opened 508 procurement centres nationwide. All cotton bales produced by the Cotton Corp. are traceable via quick response, or QR, codes, by using blockchain technology to ensure transparency and accountability, the release said. End
