MUMBAI – Wheat prices in Rajasthan's Kota were slightly down Tuesday due to supply pressure, traders said. However, maize and rice prices remained unchanged from the previous day, they added.
Prices of mill-quality WHEAT in Kota were down by INR 25 at INR 2,390 per 100 kg, local trader Aniket Mehta said. Arrivals fell by 100,000 bags to 250,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg). Although arrivals fell from the previous day, they were still high compared to earlier weeks and are consistent, hence weighing on prices, Mehta said, adding that arrivals are likely to be in a range of 200,000-300,000 bags per day in April.
Also, arrivals usually rise on Monday as markets are shut during the weekend, Mehta said. The peak arrival season for wheat usually ends on Apr. 15, he added.
Wheat prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were steady from the previous day at INR 2,650 per 100 kg, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Arrivals were also steady from the previous day at 4,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg). Wheat prices in Delhi remained unchanged from Monday at INR 2,625 per 100 kg, according to traders. Prices of the staple grain in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said.
In Indore, prices of MAIZE were steady at INR 2,300 per 100 kg, Kochar said. Currently, maize prices are at their lowest level and are expected to remain steady at this level, he added.
Prices of maize in Davanagere, Karnataka, also remained steady from the previous day at INR 2,000-INR 2,400 per 100 kg due to lack of new cues, local trader Shiva Kumar said. Arrivals were also largely the same at 200 bags (1 bag = 60 kg), as the season has almost ended and those farmers who did not sell the grain are currently selling it, he said. Maize is grown in the kharif season during mid-June and October in Karnataka.
Meanwhile, the area under maize, the largest coarse cereal grown during the season, rose to 622,000 hectares from 513,000 hectares a year ago, according to data released by the agriculture ministry Tuesday. Maize acreage has increased as farmers have shifted from other crops like groundnut due to higher returns.
Prices of kolam RICE in Nagpur, Maharashtra, were unchanged at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg. Prices of new basmati rice were also unchanged at INR 6,000-INR 6,400 per 100 kg in the Vashi market, Vora said. Prices of broken rice were steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora added. End
