MUMBAI – Prices of pulses were mixed in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana rose due to firm demand from stockists and millers amid low arrivals of the rabi crop, they said. Prices of tur fell due to sluggish demand and a rise in arrivals as market participants offload their stocks in fear of further fall in prices, they said. Prices of masur are expected to stay range-bound in the medium term, they said.

CHANA prices in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 50 from Monday to INR 6,200-INR 6,225 per 100 kg, said Ankit Kedia, a local trader. The market received 1,800 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of arrivals. Prices are supported by firm demand from stockists amid low arrivals of the rabi crop, he said. "Arrivals are yet to begin in full swing after the market reopened following the closure during the financial year-end," he said.

Demand from millers has also increased as they have shifted to buying domestic chana from Australian chana, Kedia said. With the 10% duty on chana imports, which came into effect from Mar. 31, chana imports from Australia dropped, he said. "The stock of Australian imports currently in the country is dwindling, making it more expensive than domestic chana," he said.

Kedia expects chana prices to rise to INR 7,000 per 100 kg in the medium term. Prices of chana in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 100 from Monday to INR 6,150-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.

TUR prices in Akola fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 7,500-INR 7,525 per 100 kg, Kedia said. The market received 1,500 bags (1 bag = 50 kg) of arrivals. Demand for the legume is low due to poor sales of processed dal, or tur dal, he said. "The demand for processed tur  is sluggish - millers are only able to sell 20% of what they have purchased from the spot markets," he said.

Prices were also weighed down by ample arrivals of tur in the market, Kedia said. The market expects demand for tur to be low in the medium term, prompting everyone to sell their stocks in fear of further fall in prices, he said. Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, were steady at INR 6,011-INR 7,766 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals fell by 1,535 bags to 5,193 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,100-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, said Raja Jain, a local trader. Prices could keep fluctuating by INR 500 per 100 kg in the next couple of months. "No particular change in demand and supply is foreseen in the medium term," he said.

Prices could find some support from the government's procurement, but it will not be substantial enough for an upward trend in prices, traders said. The government has approved the procurement of 940,548 tonnes of masur for the season, which is yet to begin. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation will purchase masur from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh at the minimum support price of INR 6,700 per 100 kg.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, fell by INR 50 from Monday to INR 6,575-INR 6,600 per 100 kg, the association said. Prices of the choti variety of masur in Bareilly also fell by INR 50 from the previous day to INR 6,900-INR 6,950 per 100 kg.  End
