MUMBAI – Prices of chana rose Thursday, while those of tur and masur were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana rose as the lower rates have encouraged buyers to stock up on the legume, they said. Prices of tur and masur are expected to rise in the short term due to the government's procurement activities, they said

CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 200 from Wednesday to INR 6,150-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. While prices have risen above the minimum support price of INR 5,650 per 100 kg, they are still on the lower side, encouraging traders, millers, and stockists to stock up on the legume, he said.

Prices are also supported by the government's procurement activities, Mangal said. In order to build up buffer stocks, the government has approved the procurement of 2.79 million tonnes of chana, mainly from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Gujarat. Mangal expects prices to rise by INR 300 per 100 kg in the next one month, as seasonal demand, especially with the upcoming wedding season, is likely to increase.

Prices of chana in Bikaner, Rajasthan, rose by INR 300 from Wednesday to INR 5,600 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 7,675-INR 7,700 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. Prices are expected to rise in the short term as the lower prices of the legume are making it more attractive to buyers, he said. A fall in arrivals is also supporting prices, with farmers holding back stocks, unwilling to sell their produce at lower prices, he said.

The government's procurement activities, especially in Karnataka, could support prices as well, Gupta said. The Karnataka government is offering a bonus of INR 450 per 100 kg, over and above the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg, bringing the total procurement price to INR 8,000 per 100 kg.

The government has procured 246,000 tonnes of tur from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana as of Mar. 25, according to a release by the Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers' Welfare. In the interest of farmers, the procurement period in Karnataka has been extended by another 30 days, to May 1, the release said.

Prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, rose by INR 200 from Wednesday to INR 6,201-INR 7,659 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals fell 2,653 bags to 4,338 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MASUR prices in Indore were steady at INR 6,150-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Similar to chana, prices of masur are also expected to increase due to the government's procurement activities, he said. In another month, prices are seen rising by INR 200 per 100 kg, he said.

Once prices rise, farmers will be more keen to sell their produce in the spot markets than to the government, Mangal said. "Even if the rates offered by the government would be higher in some markets, farmers are more likely to sell at the spot, willing to absorb a loss of INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg if it means to have instant cash payments at hand," he said. The government usually processes payments via banks, which take much longer, he said.

The government has approved the procurement of 940,548 tonnes of masur for the season, which is yet to begin. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation will purchase masur from Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh at the minimum support price of INR 6,700 per 100 kg.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, rose INR 25 from Wednesday to INR 6,550-INR 6,575 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices of the choti variety of masur in Bareilly were steady at INR 6,900-INR 6,950 per 100 kg.  End
