MUMBAI – India exported 3.3 million tonnes of non-basmati white rice in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) as of Mar. 25, up a steep 41% on year, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution said on Tuesday. The government had banned the export of non-basmati white rice in July 2023 and lifted the ban in September but imposed a minimum export price of $490 per tonne.

The minimum export price of $490 per tonne was removed in October 2024. This lifted overall rice exports to 19.9 million tonnes in FY25 as of Mar. 25 from 16.4 million tonnes the previous year, the release said.

On Mar. 7, the government also allowed exports of non-basmati broken rice. It had banned exports of non-basmati broken rice in September 2022 to control prices in the domestic market.

The decision to lift the ban on exports comes at a time when rice stocks in the country are abundant. According to data from Food Corp. of India, rice stocks in the Centre's pool were at 36.8 million tonnes as of Mar. 1, much higher than 26.3 million tonnes a year ago. The current stock is also way above the buffer norm of 21.04 million tonnes as of Apr. 1.

"The domestic production of agri commodities, their availability and import/export is monitored closely by the government and keeping in mind the interest of the consumers, domestic farmers and industry, the government makes necessary policy interventions as and when required to balance domestic food security in the country," the ministry said in a release, citing a written reply by Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, minister of state for consumer affairs, food, and public distribution, to a question in the Lok Sabha Tuesday.  End
