MUMBAI – Mills crushed a total of 1.15 million tonnes of mustard seeds during March, according to estimates by Jaipur-based Marudhar Trading Agency. In February, mills across India crushed around 600,000 tonnes, the agency said in a report. Arrivals in March were estimated at 1.45 million tonnes, up from 250,000 tonnes in February, according to the report.

Mustard is a rabi crop sown from October to early December in the north, east, and northeast India. The crop matures in 108–147 days and is harvested from mid-February to May.

Marudhar Trading Agency has revised downward its estimate for mustard production in the marketing season 2024-25 (Apr-Mar) to 11.8 million tonnes from 12.0 million tonnes earlier.

The government agencies like the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India and Haryana State Cooperative Supply and Marketing Federation has procured around 50,000 tonnes of mustard seed in March, data from Marudhar Trading Agency showed. Procurement of new crop will begin around Apr. 10 in Rajasthan, a trader with the agency said.

"Mustard prices are above the minimum support price of INR 5,950 per 100 kg but they might go down with the arrival pressure in mandis across India," the trader said. As on Tuesday, mustard prices in Jaipur, Rajasthan, were in the range of INR 6,375-INR 6,400 per 100 kg.

The total stock across the country at the end of March was estimated at 10.6 million tonnes, including 9.5 million tonnes with farmers. Inventories with stockists and processors are estimated at 450,000 tonnes and with agencies like National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation at 700,000 tonnes, according to Marudhar Trading Agency.
