MUMBAI – Prices of mustard seed rose in Jaipur, while those of groundnut fell in Gondal on Tuesday, traders said. Prices of soybean in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were not available as the market was closed, they said.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur rose by INR 75 to INR 6,375-INR 6,400 per 100 kg, a trader from Marudhar Trading Agency said. All-India mustard arrivals were unchanged at 800,000 tonnes on Tuesday. Farmers are waiting for government procurement to start for new mustard crop, he said. Government agencies will begin mustard procurement in Rajasthan from Apr. 10, he added. However, due to pressure of increasing arrivals of the new crop, the rise in prices of the oilseed may be limited, he added.

SOYBEAN prices in Indore were unavailable as the market was shut, said Narendra Porwal, a local trader. Most mandis in Madhya Pradesh were shut on for closing of accounts at the end of the financial year, he said. Markets will resume trade on Wednesday, he added.

GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal, Gujarat, were down by INR 250 at INR 4,300-INR 5,850 per 100 kg, compared to Mar. 21, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. There were poor quality arrivals on Tuesday, he said. Markets were shut from Mar. 22 to Mar. 31, for closing of account books at the end of the financial year, said Virvani.

Groundnut acreage fell 4% on year to 296,000 hectares, according to data from the agriculture ministry released on Tuesday.

Currently, groundnut is not fetching high returns to farmers, because of which they are shifting to other crops in most states, said Neharu Kher, managing director of Across Overseas Pvt Ltd. Farmers are shifting from groundnut to moong and urad in Gujarat and to maize in Rajasthan, Virvani said.
