Govt buys 17.4 mln tn of paddy in Punjab, meets 94% of procurement target

MUMBAI – The government has procured 17.4 million tonnes of paddy, or 94% of its procurement target for Punjab, as of Mar. 24, the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food, and Public Distribution said Tuesday. The government had set the target for paddy procurement at 18.5 million tonnes in Punjab for 2024-25 (Oct-Sep). 

 

The procurement of wheat and Paddy in a state is based upon estimated production, marketable surplus and agricultural crop pattern, the ministry said in a release, citing the written reply by Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, minister of state for consumer affairs, food, and public distribution, to a question in the Lok Sabha Tuesday. "During the food secretaries' meeting held on Feb. 2, the period for procurement of wheat during rabi marketing season 2025-26 has been fixed from Apr. 1 to Mar. 15,"  it said. 

 

As of Mar. 24, the government has purchased 75.9 million tonnes of paddy across the country, according to the release. The government has set the minimum support price of grade A paddy at INR 2,320 per 100 kg and that of common variety at INR 2,300 per 100 kg.

 

The government had set the all India kharif paddy procurement target at 49.56 million tonnes and that for rabi crop was set at 7.0 million tonnes. During 2023-24(Oct-Sep), the government procured 78.2 million tonnes of paddy, against the target of 62.1 million tonnes.

 

Meanwhile, the government procured 12.46 million tonnes of wheat from Punjab farmers in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar), and the country's wheat buying was at 26.6 million tonnes. The government had set the minimum support price for wheat at INR 2,125 per 100 kg for last year and INR 2,275 per 100 kg for 2025-26.  End
