MUMBAI - Prices of tur are likely to rise in the near term, supported by the government's procurement activities, a slowdown in arrivals, and as many spot markets are shut for the financial year-end, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report Monday.
Prices could also be supported due to weak sales at lower prices, wedding season demand, and the approval of Tamil Nadu's supply tender for tur, the association said. Additionally, delays at Chennai port may cause a short-term dearth of imported tur, supporting prices. Though the recent earthquake in Myanmar has caused extensive damage in the country, loading and exports of tur are not likely to be majorly impacted, the association said.
A steep rise in prices could, however, be checked due to the abundant availability of cheaper substitutes such as yellow peas, a drop in consumption during summer, and cheaper imported tur available in Sudan and Malawi, the association said.
Prices of tur rose in the week ended Saturday due to lower arrivals of the kharif crop in spot markets, the association said. Arrivals slowed down due to the financial year-end market closures, as well as farmers holding back their produce, unwilling to sell at lower prices, it said.
High cost and freight prices in Myanmar, and scanning delays at the Chennai port also supported prices. Additionally, the government's procurement activity boosted market sentiment. The government has procured 246,000 tonnes of tur from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana as of Mar. 25, according to a release by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare Thursday.
In the week ended Saturday, prices of tur in Akola, Maharashtra, rose by INR 125 from the earlier week, to INR 7,775-INR 7,800 per 100 kg, according to the association. Similarly, prices of tur at Kalaburagi, Karnataka, rose by INR 86 per 100 kg to INR 6,253-INR 7,713 per 100 kg. End
