MUMBAI – The government has procured 246,000 tonnes of tur from Andhra Pradesh, Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Telangana as of Tuesday, according to a release by the Ministry of Agriculture & Farmers' Welfare citing Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan. The procurement has benefited 171,569 farmers from these states, the report cited Chouhan as saying.
In the interest of farmers, the procurement period in Karnataka has been extended by another 30 days, to May 1, the release further stated.
Tur is being procured under the price support scheme for the kharif 2024-25 season through central nodal agencies such as the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation Ltd. and the National Cooperative Consumers' Federation of India Ltd. The government will also purchase tur from Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Uttar Pradesh at the minimum support price of INR 7,550 per 100 kg.
The government has also approved the procurement of 2.79 million tonnes of chana under the price support scheme during the 2024-25 rabi season, the release said. Earlier, Centre had sanctioned the purchase of 2.16 million tonnes of chana at the minimum support price of INR 5,650 per 100 kg. The rise in the approved procurement of chana is due to the government's intent to replenish its depleted buffer stocks, Informist had reported on Mar. 20, citing a senior government official. End
