MUMBAI - Prices of wheat and maize fell Thursday due to rising arrivals, traders said. Prices of rice were steady amid lack of new cues, they added.

Prices of WHEAT fell across most markets in the country on higher arrivals. Mill-quality wheat prices in Rajasthan's Kota market were down by INR 25 at INR 2,375 per 100 kg, as arrivals rose by 5,000 bags to 125,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), local trader Aniket Mehta said. Prices of the same quality wheat were down by INR 40 at INR 2,750 per 100 kg in Delhi, according to traders.

However, the downside in wheat prices was limited due to firm demand from the government and private traders. The government also said the current wheat stock limit on market entities will expire on Monday and thereafter these entities should just disclose to the government the stocks held by them on Friday. The removal of stock limit is also likely to support prices, Mehta said.

On Feb. 20, the government further reduced the quantity of wheat trade entities can stock. This was applicable till Mar. 31. As per the revised stockholding norms, a wheat trader or wholesaler cannot stock more than 250 tonnes against the earlier limit of 1,000 tonnes. For retailers, the stock limit is reduced to 4 tonnes per retail outlet from 5 tonnes. In depots, they can stock 4 tonnes multiplied by the total number of outlets, a release said. Earlier, big chain retailers could stock 5 tonnes per outlet.

However, prices of wheat rose slightly by INR 20 to INR 2,660 per 100 kg in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Prices increased as arrivals in the market were down by 1,000 bags at 8,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. But, prices of the staple grain in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were steady compared with the previous day, at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said.

In Indore, prices of MAIZE fell by INR 5 to INR 2,340 per 100 kg because of rising summer crop arrivals in the country, Kochar said. There is high pressure from rabi arrivals in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, which are likely to weigh on prices, he said.

However, traders expect maize prices to rise by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg over the next three months. They said the upward trend is expected to begin once new arrivals in the market start decreasing.

Prices of kolam RICE in Nagpur, Maharashtra, remained steady at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg and those of new basmati rice were also unchanged at INR 6,000-INR 6,400 per 100 kg in the Vashi market, Vora said. Prices of broken rice were steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora added.  End
