MUMBAI – Prices of chana and masur rose while tur prices remained stable in key spot markets across India, traders said. Chana prices saw a rise due to last-minute buying as markets will be closed Fri-Tue. Masur prices rose on account of the government's ongoing procurement efforts. Meanwhile, tur prices held steady due to lack of trading activity in the market, as per the traders.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 from Wednesday to INR 5,775-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, said Dinesh Mangal, a local trader. Prices have risen due to last-minute buying as markets are closed Fri-Tue, he said. "Farmers are also willing to sell at lower rates, supporting the rise in demand," he said.
Prices rose because of a temporary slowdown in arrivals in the spot market ahead of the closure of the market, Mangal said. Most spot markets will be closed from Friday to Tuesday due to the financial year-end and some festivals. Gudi Padwa will be celebrated on Sunday and Id-ul-Fitr on Monday.
Prices of chana in Delhi rose by INR 100 from Wednesday to INR 5,700-INR 5,721 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
TUR prices in Akola, Maharashtra, remained steady at INR 7,600-INR 7,625 per 100 kg, said Ashok Gupta, a local trader. There were no arrivals as most of the markets were shut, Gupta said. Prices have remained unchanged due to the lack of trading activities, with many market participants busy paying off bills and maintaining accounts, he said.
"We will be able to identify the trend in prices only after the market re-opens, with full trading activity, next week," said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader.
On other hand, prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, rose by INR 100 from Wednesday to INR 6,100-INR 7,900 per 100 kg, as per the association. Arrivals fell by 2,145 bags to 2,568 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
MASUR prices in Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, increased by INR 100 to INR 5,500-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, Mangal said. Prices were supported by the government's procurement activities, he said. With prices in the spot markets well below the minimum support price of INR 6,700 per 100 kg, most farmers are keen on selling to the government over stockists and traders, he said.
"It is very likely that most of the masur crop in the state will end up being sold to the government due to the higher prices being offered by them," Mangal said. The Centre has sanctioned procurement of 940,548 tonnes of masur during the 2024-25 rabi season under the price support scheme. The federation will purchase masur in Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh at the minimum support price.
Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,900 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 5,900-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
