Maharashtra summer crop area up 36% on year, maize up 101%

MUMBAI – Sowing of summer crops in Maharashtra has progressed to 405,341 hectares as of Monday, up 36% on year from 298,730 hectares sown in the same period last year, according to a report released by the state agriculture department. Maize acreage rose substantially by 101% on year to 74,609 hectares from 37,135 hectares a year ago.

 

The acreage under paddy so far was 139,120 hectares, up from 137,043 hectares last year, according to the report. The area sown under bajra rose to 31,324 hectares from 25,846 hectares a year ago, while that of jowar also to rose to 26,983 hectares from 19,397 hectares last year.

 

The acreage under moong in the state was 11,325 hectares, up from 4,549 hectares a year ago, the report showed. Similarly, the area sown under urad rose to 1,376 hectares from 410 hectares last year.

 

The total area sown under all oilseeds was 116,734 hectares, up from 72,628 hectares sown in the previous year, according to the report. Under oilseeds, the acreage under groundnut rose to 83,484 hectares, up from 55,761 hectares last year.

 

Summer crops are grown for a short period between the kharif and rabi seasons, with harvest taking place between April and May. Besides rice, sesame, and groundnut, the other major summer crops in the state include fruits and vegetables such as banana, pumpkin, and tomato.

 

The water level in dams across Maharashtra was 48.6% of the live storage capacity as of Wednesday, compared with 41% a year ago, according to data from the state water resources department.  End
