MUMBAI – Prices of tur fell on Wednesday, while those of chana and masur were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of tur fell amid lack of demand and steady arrivals, they said. Prices of chana and masur remained unchaged due to low trading activity ahead of the financial year-end, they said. Both chana and masur prices are expected to fall in the short term due to rising arrivals of the rabi crop, they said.

CHANA prices in Ashok Nagar, Madhya Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,550 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices are unchanged as the number of active market participants dropped, he said. "With the financial year ending soon, many are busy with paying off bills and maintaining their accounts," he added.

Prices are seen falling next week amid low demand and high arrivals of the rabi crop, Kochar sir. "Demand for chana is set to fall as Ramadan will end on Monday," he said.

The government is considering 11% import duty on chana – 5% basic customs duty, 5% agriculture infrastructure and development cess, and 1% social welfare cess, Informist reported on Tuesday, quoting a government official. This proposal, recommended by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, will be finalised at an inter-ministerial committee meeting on Wednesday.

Prices of chana in Bikaner, Rajasthan, fell by INR 200 from Tuesday to INR 5,000 per 100 kg, traders said.

TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, fell by INR 50 from Tuesday to INR 6,500-INR 7,350 per 100 kg, said Rahul Srinivas, a local trader. The market received 35-36 trucks (1 truck = 20,000-25,000 kg) of arrivals, he said. Prices are weighed down by low demand amid steady arrivals of the kharif crop, he said.

With low trading activity in the market, demand for the legume has dropped, Srinivas said. Most spot markets will close at the end of the month on account of the financial year-end and several festivals. Gudi Padwa will take place on Sunday, while Eid-al Fitr will take place Monday. "We will be able to identify the trend in prices only after the market re-opens, with full trading activity, next week," he said.

Prices of tur in Kalburagi, Karnataka, fell by INR 100 from Tuesday to INR 6,006-INR 7,663 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association. Arrivals rose by 710 bags to 4,713 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).

MASUR prices in Ashok Nagar were steady at INR 6,000-INR 6,150 per 100 kg, said Kochar. Prices were steady due to lack of trading activity in the market, he said. Kochar expects prices to fall in the short term due to an expected rise in arrivals of the rabi crop, he said.

Prices of the moti variety of masur in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 5,700-INR 5,900 per 100 kg. Prices of the choti variety in Lalitpur were also steady at INR 5,900-INR 6,200 per 100 kg, according to the association.  End
