MUMBAI –  Prices of mustard seed and soybean rose in Jaipur, and Indore, respectively, traders said. Spot prices of groundnut in Gondal, Gujarat, were not available as the markets were closed, they said.

MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur in Rajasthan rose by INR 50 to INR 6,100-INR 6,125 per 100 kg, a trader from Marudhar Trading Agency said. All-India mustard arrivals fell to 1.40 million tonnes, according to the agency. Mustard arrivals across the country were around 1.55 million tonnes on Monday.

"Prices are hovering between INR 6,000-INR 6,150 per 100 kg since a week," Mahesh Sameriya, a trader from the state said. "Mustard prices are under pressure of increasing arrivals per day, however government procurement can support the prices in near term," he said. Mustard procurement will begin from Apr. 10 in Rajasthan, he said. There is less moisture content in the mustard crop compared to last year, he added.

SOYBEAN prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 50 to INR 3,800-INR 4,050 per 100 kg, with arrivals decreasing by 1,000 bags to 2,000 bags (1 bag = 90 kg), said Shailendra Soni, a local trader. "Soybean prices rose slightly on Tuesday due to a fall in arrivals but they are far below the minimum support price of INR 4,892 per 100 kg," Soni said. Even the huge procurement has not helped prices, he said. The National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India has procured 1.47 million tonnes of soybean, or 43.5% of the total sanctioned quantity of 3.38 million tonnes, till Mar 14.

He believes price fluctuations of INR 25-INR 50 is an everyday phenomenon but in the long term, prices will fall further due to poor demand for Indian soymeal in domestic and international markets and increasing imports of soyoil, he said. Crude soyoil imports in February increased to 283,737 tonnes from 172,936 tonnes a year ago. Crude soyoil imports during Nov-Feb rose to 1.6 million tonnes from 664,339 tonnes in the same period last year, according to the data by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India.

GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal, Gujarat, were unavailable as the market was closed, said Dilipbhai Ramani, a local trader. Most spot markets such as Rajkot, Gondal, Junagadh and Saurashtra were closed, he said. Most mandis in Gujarat will remain shut for closing of accounts at the end of the financial year, he said. Markets will resume trade on Apr. 1, he said.
