MUMBAI – Wheat prices fell in most key markets in the country on Tuesday due to a rise arrivals, traders said. Similarly, maize prices also fell due to increasing rabi arrivals, they added. However, rice prices remain unchanged from Monday due to a lack of new cues, they said.

In Indore, Madhya Pradesh, prices of mill-quality WHEAT fell by INR 30 to INR 2,650 per 100 kg from the previous day due to a rise in arrivals, local trader Gaurav Kochar said. Arrivals in the market rose by 1,000 bags to 9,000 bags (1 bag = 100 kg), he said. The fall in wheat prices is limited as the government is buying the staple grain from farmers of the state at INR 2,600 per 100 kg, which is the floor price in the state, Kochar said.

Madhya Pradesh government has announced a bonus of INR 175 per 100 kg over the minimum support price of INR 2,425 per 100 kg for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar). The Food Corp. of India and state agencies started wheat purchases early from Mar. 15 in Madhya Pradesh, against the typical start in April. As of Monday, Madhya Pradesh procured 49,394 tonnes, up from 4,984 tonnes during the corresponding period last year.

Prices of mill-quality wheat in Navi Mumbai's Vashi market were also down by INR 50 at INR 2,725 per 100 kg, wholesale dealer Devendra Vora said. He expects prices to fall by INR 50-INR 100 per 100 kg in the near-term due to arrivals pressure. Prices of wheat in Delhi were also down by INR 20 at INR 2,820 per 100 kg, according to traders.

However, prices of the same quality wheat were unchanged from Monday in Rajasthan's Kota market at 2,400-INR 2,450 per 100 kg, while arrivals fell by 10,000 bags to 90,000 bags (1 bag = 50 kg), local trader Aniket Mehta said. He added wheat with more moisture content is being sold at INR 2,350 per 100 kg.

Meanwhile, FCI's wheat purchases as of Monday in Rajasthan were at 2,792 tonnes, up from 635 tonnes during the corresponding period last year. The Rajasthan government has announced a bonus of INR 150 over and above the minimum support price of INR 2,425 per 100 kg.

In Indore, prices of MAIZE were down by INR 20 at INR 2,350 per 100 kg due to fall in demand and rising summer arrivals in the country, Kochar said. He expects prices to fall in the near-term as maize arrivals have icreased across the country. There is high pressure from rabi arrivals in Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Madhya Pradesh, which are likely to weigh on prices. However, the downside in prices is limited to INR 2,350 per 100 kg, which is the current level, as buyers are expected at this level, Kochar added. He said prices likely to be around INR 2,350 per 100 kg in April.

Prices of maize in Karnataka's Davanagere were unchanged from the previous day at INR 2,000-INR 2,400 per 100 kg, Shiva Kumar, a local trader said, adding that arrivals plunged to 100 bags from 2,000 bags (1 bag = 60 kg) last week. Arrivals fell as farmers are waiting for the prices to rise to sell the produce, he said. Also, the arrival season has come to an end, so arrivals are likely to be at 500-1,000 bags for next few months, he added.

However, traders expect maize prices to rise by INR 100-INR 200 per 100 kg over the next three months. "This upward trend is expected to begin once new arrivals in the market start decreasing," Kochar said.

Prices of kolam RICE from Nagpur, Maharashtra, remained steady at INR 5,200–INR 5,400 per 100 kg and those of new basmati rice were unchanged at INR 6,000-INR 6,400 per 100 kg in the Vashi market, Devendra Vora, a wholesale broker, said. Prices of broken rice were also steady from the previous day at INR 2,700 per 100 kg, Vora said.  End
