MUMBAI – Prices of chana fell, while prices of tur and moong were steady in key spot markets across the country, traders said. Prices of chana fell due to low demand with subdued market activity ahead of the end of this financial year. Prices of tur were unchanged amid the government's procurement activities and steady arrivals, traders further said. Prices of moong are likely to stay steady till next month, they added.
CHANA prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, fell by INR 150 from Friday to INR 5,625-INR 5,650 per 100 kg, said Gaurav Kochar, a local trader. Prices have fallen due to low demand, he said. The number of active market participants has dropped with many of them busy with book-keeping and paying off dues as the financial year draws to an end, he said.
Prices could remain low this week due to subdued market activity, Kochar said. Many spot markets across the country will be closed from Mar. 28 to Apr. 1, he said.
Prices were also weighed down by the high arrivals of the rabi crop, Kochar said. According to the agriculture ministry's second advance estimate released Monday, chana output in 2024-25 is pegged at 11.5 million tonnes, down from 12.3 million tonnes a year ago.
Prices of chana in Delhi also fell by INR 150 from Friday to INR 5,485 per 100 kg, according to the India Pulses and Grains Association.
TUR prices in Solapur, Maharashtra, were steady at INR 6,500-INR 7,400 per 100 kg, said Mukesh Sanklecha, a local trader. The market received 40-45 trucks (1 truck = 20,000-25,000 kilograms) of arrivals, he said. Prices are unchanged due to lack of trading activity in the market, he said.
While the government's procurement activities have provided some support to prices, the steady arrivals of the kharif crop have prevented a further rise, Sanklecha said. Tur production in Maharashtra rose to 1.19 million tonnes from 890,000 tonnes in the kharif season last year. The agriculture ministry's second advance estimate has pegged the country's tur production in 2024-25 at 3.5 million tonnes, unchanged from the first estimate.
As of Thursday, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation has procured 9,484.54 tonnes of tur in Maharashtra for the 2024 kharif season under the price support scheme.
On other hand, prices of tur in Kalaburagi, Karnataka, rose by INR 100 from Friday to INR 6,209-INR 7,623 per 100 kg, according to the association. Arrivals rose by 2,860 bags to 5,530 bags (1 bag = 50 kg).
MOONG prices in Solapur were steady at INR 7,200-INR 8,400 per 100 kg, Sanklecha said. Though arrivals of the legume have slowed down, demand is also muted, keeping prices steady, he said. The markets will begin receiving arrivals of the summer moong crop next month, and prices are expected to fall under arrival pressure before picking up due to renewed demand, he said.
Prices of moong in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh, were steady at INR 6,500-INR 7,200 per 100 kg, according to the association. End
