MUMBAI – Chana is likely to gain support at lower prices as traders, millers, and stockists may remain active due to increased demand in the upcoming festival season, the India Pulses and Grains Association said in its weekly report on Monday. Prices may also gain support from the government procurement, the report said.

In the week ended Saturday, chana prices increased, gaining support from buying activities of millers, traders, and stockists at lower prices. In Akola, Maharashtra, prices of chana for the week ended Saturday rose by INR 350 per 100 kg from the previous week to INR 5,775-INR 5,800 per 100 kg, according to the association. Prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, rose by INR 150 per 100 kg to INR 5,825-INR 5,850 per 100 kg.

Arrivals were slow in Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, and in other local markets during Holi celebration. After Holi, arrivals in Madhya Pradesh were lower than expected as farmers focused on selling wheat, peas, and mustard, and were less interested in selling chana and masoor at low prices, the association said. However, arrivals were better in Rajasthan and Gujarat.

Government procurement, with a sanctioned purchase of 2.16 million tonnes due to low buffer stocks, may support prices in the near-term. As on Mar. 20, the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India Ltd, has procured just 2,969.75 tonnes of chana from Telangana. Chana procurement is yet to begin in most states. The minimum support price for chana is INR 5,650 per 100 kg for 2025-26 (Apr-Mar) rabi marketing season. Moreover, festivals such as Gudi Padwa may further support prices in the coming days, the report said.

Market participants will monitor arrivals from the first week of April closely, as increased pressure, procurement trends and imports of chickpea and yellow peas could influence future price movements, the report said. The deadline for chana imports is Mar. 31. Due to high import costs, there are concerns of imports from Australia, the report said. End
