MUMBAI – Prices of mustard seed and soybean fell in Jaipur, and Indore, respectively, traders said. Groundnut prices remained steady in Gondal, Gujarat, they said.
MUSTARD seed prices in Jaipur fell by INR 25 to INR 6,075-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, a trader from Marudhar Trading Agency said. All-India mustard arrivals increased to 1.45 million tonnes, according to the agency. Mustard arrivals across the country were around 1.40 million tonnes on Thursday. "Farmers are eargerly waiting for mustard procurement to start in Rajasthan," the trader said. Government procurement of the new mustard crop may start from Apr. 10 in Rajasthan, he added. Similarly, in some mandis of Haryana such as Hodal, mustard procurement has not started yet because of high moisture content in the new crop, due to which farmers have to sell their produce at throwaway prices, he added.
SOYBEAN prices in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, were down by INR 50 at INR 3,800-INR 4,100 per 100 kg, with arrivals fell by 500 bags to 2,500 bags (1 bag = 90 kg), Shailendra Soni, a local trader, said. "Factors like poor demand, excess supply of soybean in various markets across India and huge imports of soyoil are weighing down on oilseed prices," he said.
Crude soyoil imports in February increased to 283,737 tonnes from 172,936 tonnes a year ago. Crude soyoil imports during Nov-Feb rose to 1.6 million tonnes from 664,339 tonnes in the same period last year, according to data by the Solvent Extractors' Association of India.
Soni is of the view that soybean prices may fall further in the long term owing to poor demand for Indian soymeal both domestically and globally.
GROUNDNUT prices in Gondal, Gujarat, were steady at INR 4,550-INR 6,100 per 100 kg, said Ashok Virvani, a local trader. "Poor quality groundnuts are continously arriving in Gondal, Saurashtra and other mandis of Gujarat, since a week," he said. This is due to quality groundnuts procured by the government earlier, he said. "Weak demand along with bumper crop expectations may lead to fall in groundnut prices in the long term," he said. The production of kharif groundnut is estimated at 10.4 million tonnes compared with 8.7 million tonnes a year ago, according to the government's second advance estimate for 2024-25 (Jul-Jun).
Most mandis in Gujarat will remain closed from Saturday for closing of account books at the end of the financial year, said Virvani. The markets will reopen on Mar. 31, he said.
