NEW DELHI - Congress leader Jairam Ramesh on Friday raised in the Rajya Sabha the issue of recovery of cash at the residence of a sitting judge of the Delhi High Court and requested Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar to give direction to the government to take steps towards increasing judicial accountability. A huge pile of unaccounted cash was allegedly recovered from Justice Yashwant Varma's residence in the city. media reports said.
"This morning, we have read about a shocking case of huge amounts of cash unearthed at the residence of a judge of the Delhi High Court. I request that you please make some observations on this and give necessary directions to the government to come up with a proposal for increasing judicial accountability," he added.
Dhankhar told the house that he will find a mechanism for a structured discussion on the issue during the session. "What bothers me is that the incident happened and did not immediately surface. If it happens with a politician, he becomes a target, a bureaucrat, an industrialist immediately and therefore systemic response which is transparent, accountable, effective, I am sure will be on the way," the chairman said.
According to media reports, the Supreme Court on Friday initiated an in-house probe after a huge pile of unaccounted cash was allegedly recovered from the residence of Delhi High Court Justice Yashwant Varma after a fire broke out at his bungalow on Holi weekend.
Justice Varma took oath as a permanent judge of the Allahabad High Court on Feb. 1, 2016, and was appointed as a judge of the Delhi High Court on Oct. 11, 2021. End
