MUMBAI – The government has released 1.82 trillion rupees as of Feb. 15 to the Food Corp. of India and state corporations under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, according to a report by the Standing Committee on Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. This accounts for 88.6% of the total allocation of INR 2.05 trillion for the scheme in 2024-25 (Apr-Mar).
Under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana, the government provides free food grains to 813 million beneficiaries. The government has allocated around 111.8 million tonnes of foodgrains under the scheme, which was launched following the economic disruptions caused by the nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic in early 2020 at a financial outlay of INR 3.91 trillion. The government has extended the scheme for five years starting from January 2024.
In its report, the committee urged the Department of Food and Public Distribution to manage and monitor the grants carefully to ensure that the free food grains reach the beneficiaries under the National Food Security Act with minimum wastage. The committee also said prudent utilisation of funds will contribute to the long-term food security and welfare of the country's most affected population by economic and social challenges. End
