NEW DELHI – The Centre, which has sanctioned purchases of 1.5 million tonnes of mustard for the 2024-25 rabi season, is likely to sanction procurement of another 1.3 million tonnes from Rajasthan as prices of the oilseed are ruling around the minimum support prices, according to a senior government official. On Tuesday, mustard seed prices in Jaipur were INR 6,000-INR 6,025 per 100 kg, marginally above the MSP of INR 5,950 per 100 kg.

"We have already made a record purchase of soyabean and groundnut as their prices crashed. We are looking to do the same for mustard to support farmers. While we have already sanctioned purchases of about 1.5 million tonnes of mustard, a formal proposal from the Rajasthan government is yet awaited and is likely to come in either Wednesday or Thursday. In our informal conversation, they have asked for approval for the procurement of about 1.3 million tonnes. We will approve it once the proposal comes in," the official said. The state will start procurement operations from Apr. 1.

According to an official in the Assam government, while procurement of mustard has begun in the state, it is yet to take off in full swing. "We generally start procuring mustard in Assam from April, however, with rains lashing the state early last year, we started procuring in March this year. But it has not been very conducive with rains lashing the state in March itself this time. We are trying to procure on dry and sunny days," the official said.

According to the agriculture ministry's second advance estimates, the country is projected to produce about 12.87 million tonnes of mustard in the current rabi season, down from 13.26 million tonnes last year. Rajasthan, one of the biggest producers of the oilseed, is estimated to produce about 5.5 million tonnes of mustard.  End
