MUMBAI – India's oilmeal exports in February fell 36% on year to 330,319 tonnes, according to data released by The Solvent Extractors' Association of India on Tuesday. Total oilmeal exports in Apr-Feb fell 12% to 3.9 million tonnes, the data showed. The decline in exports in Apr-Feb was mainly due to a fall in the exports of rapeseed meal and castor seed meal, the association said.

The overall export of soymeal during Apr-Feb has been more or less same as last year and is reported at 1.94 million tonnes compared with 1.93 million tonnes in the same period last year. Germany and France are the major countries that import non-gentically modified soymeal from India. However, export of soymeal in the first five months of oil year 2024-25 (Oct-Sept) was 1.03 million tonnes, compared with 1.35 million tonnes, down by 23%, according to the association.

"In last one month due to excessive supply and poor demand in world market, soybean meal price further reduced by $20 per tonne to $360 per tonne compared to $380 per tonne month back," the association said.

"Kenya has turned out to be emerging new market for Indian soymeal and imported 149,329 tonnes in last five months," the SEA said.

India exported 1.68 million tonnes of rapeseed meal in Apr-Feb, lower than 2.04 million tonnes a year ago. Similarly, in February, exports of mustard meal fell to 140,038 tonnes from 144,372 tonnes a year ago. Bangladesh, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam are the major importers of rapeseed meal.

Rapeseed meal export plummeted due to lack of demand, and price fell by more than $80 and were around $190 as of Monday, compared with $270 a month back, the association said.

Similarly, exports of castor seed meal fell to 16,665 tonnes in February from 22,402 tonnes a year ago, the association said. Also, exports of castor meal were down at 274,670 tonnes in Apr-Feb compared to 349,664 tonnes a year ago.

However, groundnut meal export increased during February to 3,512 tonnes compared with 1,025 tonnes a year ago. During Apr-Feb, groundnut meal exports increased to 20,687 tonnes to 14,833 tonnes a year ago.

In Apr-Feb, 1.34 million tonnes of oilmeal were exported from the Kandla port, against 1.54 million tonnes a year ago, and a total of 862,359 tonnes were exported from the Mundra port, compared with 1.34 million tonnes a year ago, the SEA said. During the same period, exports from Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust in Mumbai rose to 640,495 tonnes from 392,086 tonnes a year ago, the association said.

From the Kolkata port, export of oilmeal was just 11,807 tonnes in Apr-Feb compared with 111,043 tonnes a year ago. Oilmeal exports from other ports during the same period stood at 1.08 million tonnes compared with 1.11 tonnes in the corresponding period last year, the SEA said.

During Apr-Feb, India's oilmeal exports to Bangladesh fell to 689,380 tonnes from 779,558 tonnes. Similarly, exports to Vietnam fell 221,245 tonnes from 394,660 tonnes, the data showed. Oilmeal exports to South Korea were at 614,545 tonnes, lower than 787,909 tonnes a year ago, the data showed.

During Apr-Feb, South Korea imported 394,144 tonnes of rapeseed meal, 166,053 tonnes of castor seed meal and 54,156 tonnes of soymeal. Vietnam imported 187,750 tonnes of rapeseed meal, 22,208 tonnes of soymeal, 11,283 tonnes de-oiled rice bran, and 3,003 tonnes of groundnut meal. Thailand imported 388,610 tonnes of rapeseed meal, 15,879 tonnes of soymeal and 8,655 tons of groundnut meal. Bangladesh imported 551,257 tonnes of rapeseed meal and 138,122 tonnes of soymeal. European countries become the major importer of Indian soymeal and imported about 595,878 tonnes during the same period.

The following table details exports of major types of oilmeals, in tonnes, in February and Apr-Feb, compared with the year-ago numbers (in tonnes), according to the latest data from the SEA, and the year-on-year change in percentage terms:
